Tax preparation has various levels, and there are various career paths that one can choose related to taxes. If one has an interest in tax law and wants to prepare taxes, he or she may be able to start right out of high school, or they may even need post-university training. Of course, CPAs (accountants) help people with their taxes. They talk with their clients about their tax needs and get their tax work completed for them. They can help their clients to sort through the mess that is the tax system. There are different paths that CPAs can take - they may decide to focus on different aspects of taxes ranging individual returns to auditing for large corporations. To be a CPA, one must first either get a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Sciences. For the purposes of the job, it is best if he or she majors in a related field, like business or economics. From there, they must take accounting classes, which often leads to more minor positions at accounting firms. To be licensed one must pass an excruciating series of tests that many fail the first few attempts. One does not have to be a CPA to prepare taxes, though. A bookkeeper knows a lot about taxes but does not have the certification that a CPA does. They often handle the day-to-day financial issues of a business, and have training in accounting software. Most bookkeepers do have university degrees, like CPAs do. A CPA's administrative assistant helps with the preparation of returns, though he or she is not supposed to do any sort of calculation or advisory work. They usually take care of the administrative issues relating to taxes, and assemble the tax returns when they are ready to go out to the client. They need not have much formal training; rather, they often have on-the-job training. On a day to day basis, the assistant deals with many issues related to taxes. They file clients' files and assemble them together neatly. They usually answer phones and make appointments. They deal with the preparation of taxes and must be familiar with tax paperwork. Some assistants choose to double check the accountant's work, which requires familiarity with related paperwork. Tax administrative assistants may work do billing and minor tax paperwork. |
